A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE PA HERO WALK
The roots of the PA Hero Walk go back to the summer of 2007 when Al Pulice, founder and director was inspired by a young man in Giant Eagle that paid for a returning Iraqi war veterans photos. That following Veteran’s Day in 2007, Pulice and a small group of veterans and patriots from the Kiski Valley had a luncheon at Giant Eagle to honor their local veterans. That event then spawned the forming of the Kiski Valley Veterans and Patriots Association.
From there a local business man, Don Ryan approached Pulice to join forces to build a memorial adjacent to his business, Century 21 American Heritage. The now Allegheny Township War Memorial, honoring five local men that gave their lives for our country’s freedom stands proudly in Leechburg, Pennsylvania. The memorial was also the first of its kind in the United States.
Then in 2009, Pulice was inspired by Blairsville native Jeremy Feldbusch to walk across Pennsylvania to raise money and awareness for the Wounded Warrior Project. Since its inception, the PA Hero Walk has raised over $600,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project.
After listening to feedback from their supporters across the state and a great deal of consideration, the PA Hero Walk Team has decided to continue their walk as they have for the past five years. However, the decision has been made to keep the funds that they raise in Pennsylvania, for Pennsylvania Veterans and their families.
The group feels that the need in Pennsylvania is great, and they have the ability to seek out worthwhile organization to make an impact for years to come. Along with the small group that they have chosen to date, the group will continue to solicit others that could benefit in the future from their foundation. The groups that they have chosen to date are;
VETERANS MULTI SERVICE CENTER, PHILADELPHIA, PA.
SEMPER FI OUTDOOR ODESSEY, BOSWELL, PA.
MECHLING/SHAKLEY VETERANS CENTER, COWANSVILLE, PA.
OPERATION HOMEFRONT, PA
WOUNDED WARRIOR PATROL (SKIING) SEVEN SPRINGS, PA.
Along with organizations having the ability to apply for a grant from the PA Hero Walk Foundation, an individual veteran can also find an application of their website to apply for assistance. Please visit www.paherowalk.org for more information.
